Early Day Motion 545 " Scientific Procedures on Animals and the use of non animal alternatives"

EDM 545 fifth most highly supported EDM in the 2009 parliamentary session!!

268 MPs have now signed Early Day Motion 545, urging the government to do more to promote non-animal research methods, making it the sixth most highly supported EDM in the 2009 parliamentary session, out of 2421 EDMs! Click here to read Press Release.

Early Day Motion 545 tabled by Martin Horwood MP on behalf of Naturewatch highlights the steady rise in animals used in experiments over the past 10 years, while urging the government to do more to promote pioneering work that is being done in the UK to develop hi-tech methods of research that replace the use of animals. These methods include tissue engineering, bio-chips, microdosing and computer models that mimic virtual human beings.

Martin Horwood MP said ‘I am absolutely delighted by the response from right across the House of Commons, including 123 Labour MPs, 52 Conservatives and 52 Lib Dems – nearly all of the parliamentary Liberal Democrat party. I think this demonstrates a real mood for change and for much more active promotion of alternatives to animal research’.

Thank you to all our supporters and everyone who wrote to their MP, together we have sent a clear message to the government that more measures are needed to promote non-animal alternatives.

MARCH 2009 - Naturewatch Briefing sent to MP's
Focusing on the findings from an NC3Rs opinion survey that offer valuable insights into the views of scientists involved in scientific procedures on animals, the Briefing urges MPs to sign EDM 545 and support measures that will encourage non-animal alternatives. JANUARY 2009 - EDM 545 tabled on behalf of Naturewatch
As MP's enter the 2009 parliamentary session, the EDM has been retabled by Martin Horwood, on our behalf and has received the backing of co-sponsors from across the political spectrum (now Early Day Motion 545). Through EDM 545 we hope to demonstrate support for measures that will encourage the use of non-animal alternatives in scientific procedures, and halt increases in the numbers of animals used.
