 Melting a swan

A regular winter hazard for swans is becoming frozen into the ice. Not surprisingly this causes huge distress to the swan: this one, in its desperation, had beaten its wings raw in an attempt to free itself from the ice.

The swan was freed when the nearby hydroelectic dam let out some more water - it raised the river level by a couple of inches so that it melted the ice around the swan, and off it went!
