 Supporting the Kyiv Society for the Protection of Animals - SOS (SPA-SOS)

The Future

Naturewatch Foundation will continue to support and assist SPA-SOS and provide financial help for specific projects to enable the society to expand and develop its pioneering animal protection activities. Making progress within the animal welfare sphere is not an easy task in a country considered to be the world's third most corrupt, where journalists are killed or a criminal case can be fabricated for the simple 'crime' of criticising those in power.

The Society regularly feels the 'friendly embrace' of those in power but, despite considerable difficulties, continues to move forward gaining additional support from influential members of the public, city officials, international organisations and members of Kyiv's diplomatic community.

SPA-SOS will continue its wide-ranging activities, through its office and shelter, to:
 

• improve animal welfare by promoting humane awareness in schools and through the media;

• provide a service to the poor people of Kyiv enabling them to have their pets neutered free of charge;

• treat the many dogs that are injured in road accidents.

• promote the importance of introducing animal protection legislation;

• to expose and combat cruelty to animals;

• influence a change in attitude in addressing the problem of stray animal control.

• change attitudes as regards animal experiments;

• provide small animal veterinary training for students including neutering techniques; and

• provide leadership and know-how to other animal protection organisations in Ukraine.
