Humane Management of Dogs and Cats Conference, hosted by WSPA and FECAVA in Athens on 14 & 15 November 2003

Naturewatch Foundation was delighted to sponsor, Tamara Tarnawska, the President of the Kyiv Society for the Protection of Animals “SOS” to attend this valuable conference.

The aim of the conference was to present a united and holistic animal welfare message relevant to the management of stray animals. Guided by the WSPA Pet Respect programme and its key principles, based on World Health Organisation research, the importance of governments, veterinary associations and animal protection groups working together to address the problem of stray and/or unwanted dogs and cats was highlighted. The main message being that it is essential for all parties to recognise that the issue is a social problem for society as a whole – not simply an animal welfare issue.

Award Presentation

It's official! On World Animal Day, Tamara Tarnawska, president of the Kyiv SPA- SOS, was presented with a medal, a watch and a certificate by Mayor Oleksandr Omelchenko, to officially recognise her invaluable contribution to raising animal welfare standards in Ukraine. Two hundred guests were invited to witness the presentation which took place in one of the city's most beautiful concert halls.

For all those who don’t know how difficult it is to make progress for the animals in Ukraine, this is a HUGE STEP FORWARD. The Kyiv Society for the Protection of Animals “SOS” has now been officially recognised by the city authorities which, from now on, will not only serve as a protective umbrella for the activities carried out by the society, but also introduce the possibility of having a greater influence on all matters within the sphere of animal protection.
