Since 2000, the numbers have fluctuated showing a sharp increase in some years. In 2010, 4,688 procedures involved non-human primates, an increase of 10% on 2009. These procedures used 674 Marmoset or Tamarind, and 1,975 Macaque monkeys.
Non-human primates and humans share much in common, they nurture their young, show empathy, have feelings, and feel pain as much as we do. The physical and psychological distress non-human primates endure in experiments is widely recognised, and a thorough investigation into primate testing is given in Primate Testing in Europe (Animal Defenders International, 2009).
In spite of huge opposition, non-human primate testing has continued. Since 2001 over 4,000 experiments that use non-human primates have been started each year. |
