L'Oréal Campaign

 What we did and why

In June 2000 we sent all Naturewatch supporters a ‘Boycott L’Oréal’ leaflet listing the brand names of all the products made by L'Oréal and their subsidiary companies, and also informed them that Nestlé are major shareholders in L'Oréal. During October and November thousands of protest letters poured into L'Oréal's Headquarters in London. Our National Day of Protest Against L’Oréal took place on Saturday 25th November 2000, together with a demo outside L'Oréal (UK) HQ in Hammersmith on Friday 24th November 2000.

We wrote a letter to L'Oréal's London Headquarters on July 18th 2000 asking for a meeting with them to discuss their continued use of animal-tested ingredients in their products. Their reply was a very long, anonymous and unsigned letter explaining how much funding they are putting into researching alternatives to animal testing. We then telephoned them to discuss the matter and to again request a meeting. They were aware of our campaign against them because some of our Supporters had sent them samples of our leaflet, and once again they refused to meet with us personally but suggested that we set up a meeting with their industry lobbying body, the Cosmetic, Toiletry & Perfumery Association (CTPA). We therefore wrote to the CTPA, hoping they could give us more information on the number of animal tests that L'Oréal is involved in on an annual basis, and the location of the laboratories that they have dealings with.

The CTPA is the Association of the manufacturers of cosmetic, toiletry and perfumery products whose main purpose is to promote the interests of its members to the UK Government and the European Commission. Their work focuses on scientific, regulatory and legislative issues and they are in 'constant dialogue' with the UK Government. They receive advance notice of changes which can affect the cosmetic industry’s products and they pass on this advance information to their members. The CTPA therefore acts as a lobbying body for all the major cosmetics and toiletry manufacturers and retailers, and L'Oréal is a member of the UK, French and Belgian Associations.

Many thanks to all of you who sent off letters to L'Oréal's HQ.  As a result of all the letters that you wrote, L'Oréal finally wrote to us on Friday 17th November 2000 - one week before the National Day of Action - to invite us to meet with them at their Head Office in London in 2001.  So thanks to all your hard work and support we finally secured a meeting with them. Click here for details of the meeting with L'Oréal's UK Headquarters in March 2001 and for further details of the ongoing campaign against L'Oréal.

On Saturday 25th November 2000, events were held at more than 28 locations around the country, including Bootle and Bournemouth, Perth and Prestatyn, Reading and Rochdale. The images on this page are from those events.
