Australian Livestock trade

 Campaign Update

Latest news: 6 August 2004 sees demonstrations in Perth and London

6 August marked the first anniversary of the Cormo Express leaving Fremantle with its cargo of 57,000 sheep. To mark this unhappy anniversary, simultaneous demonstrations were held outside the Western Australian Premier's office in Perth and outside the Australian High Commission building in London. Read the full story here.

The secret shameful face of Australia

When the news of the Cormo Express disaster broke in 2003, Naturewatch was already becoming involved with Australian live exports and forging links with organisations such as PACAT and Animals Australia. We agreed to co-sponsor (with Compassion in World Farming) the work of PACAT to lobby the Australian Government, both State and Federal, and to raise public awareness among the Australian people – who, in the main, have made it abundantly clear that they do not want the trade to continue.

However, there’s plenty that people in the UK and other parts of the world can do to help out.

Write a letter

We are asking individuals to write to the Australian High Commission in London to emphasise the fact that this cruel trade is damaging Australia’s reputation as a civilised country. We have a template letter that you can download, sign and send as it is, or you can use it as a basis of your own letter. If you decide to write your own letter, please remember to be polite throughout – abusive letters are never taken seriously.

You could also write to the following addresses of the two Honorary Consuls in the UK:

Mr William Roxburgh
Australian Honorary Consul, Scotland
69 George Street
Edinburgh EH2 2JG

Update August 2006: the consul's office in Manchester has now been closed.
