The Sponsor a Dog Programme

The dogs pictured below are just a few of more than 900 strays rescued and saved from a barbaric death at the hands of the notorious Budka dog catchers. All are currently living at the Kyiv SPA-SOS animal protection shelter where they are happy and cared for by wonderful staff.

The economic crisis has been particularly bad in Kyiv and this has led to animals being abandoned on the streets or left outside the shelter virtually every night. Of course, SOS takes them in but it's a huge strain on the Society's limited funds and resources. This is why we called upon you to help.

However, a wonderful development in Ukraine (November 2011) means that the Ukrainian authorities are taking over responsibility for stray animals. In 2012, Naturewatch will be working with top government officials to implement a comprehensive, humane stray control programme.   For this reason, we are no longer offering the opportunity to take out new dog sponsorships and the programme will be wound down during 2012.  Everyone who currently sponsors a dog(s) at the Kyiv SPA-SOS shelter will be written to and given a number of options of alternative ways they can support our work to help animals.

For your interest, these are the dogs that, for the time being, will continue to benefit from sponsorship by supporters of Naturewatch Foundation:
Andriy is a very sociable dog and loves to be around his other canine friends.  In his younger years he preferred to stay around the front of the shelter on guard, but he has now retired to the back of the shelter for a quieter life.  He can still be found surrounded by friends, either playing or sleeping in the sun. Anichka - Once Anichka gets to know you she loves a cuddle, even though she has suffered terribly at the hands of humans.  She was burnt with hot oil and now has a nasty scar on her back - "SOS" saved her life.  In summer, she loves to sleep in the sun and can often be found lying on her back with her legs in the air.
Denys - Wherever the staff are, you’ll find Denys.  He’s the biggest dog at the shelter, and one of the friendliest.  He is always surrounded by lots of other dogs, especially Lilliya, and he bounds over for a cuddle from the kennel staff whenever possible. Mariya is a gentle lady who spends most of her days sleeping in her favourite kennel, or sunning herself just outside of her kennel.  She is free to roam wherever she wishes, but this is her favourite spot.  When she can summon the energy, she also loves a play with her friends.
Milo was rescued personally by John Ruane (Director of Naturewatch) from the horrors of Kyiv City Pound, Milo is now thoroughly enjoying himself at the Kyiv Shelter.  After his terrible ordeal he is not very trusting of people he doesn’t know, but every time we visit him we can see his confidence is growing. Bella was rescued as a puppy and lived with the President of the SPA-SOS (Tamara Tarnawska) for the first few months of her life, as she was very nervous. Now, Bella is one of the most confident and playful dogs at the shelter.
Tede is very playful and can always be found near the veterinary rooms, where he can guarantee to be near people and other dogs at all times.  Whilst he doesn’t consistently jump up for attention, he does enjoy a cuddle when he’s called over. Vasyl spends a lot of time in the middle of the shelter, sleeping and playing with his favourite group of canine friends.  This same group can often be found barking when visitors arrive, but only do so from a distance.
Anton loves attention from the Kyiv Shelter staff.  As soon as he spots someone, he’ll run over for a cuddle.  He’s very inquisitive, and has his nose into anything new that enters the shelter
Lilliya is a very sociable dog, and can always be found lazing in the sun or playing with her many friends – especially Denys and Mariya.  She also loves people, especially Natasha (Shelter Manager), and will do all she can to get a cuddle.
Marko is a timid soul.  Whilst he loves to be with his canine friends, he is more wary of people, and prefers to keep himself at a good distance from staff and visitors.  He’ll often be found keeping watch near the door where visitors arrive, or sunning himself on the roof of the veterinary centre. Petruso is very much a ‘Jack the Lad’.  Always in the thick of things, and getting up to mischief, Petruso can always be found running around with his friends.  He’s a little wary of people and prefers to keep his distance, though as he learns to trust someone he will come over for a sniff before sprinting off to play elsewhere.
Yevheniy is a bit of a loner, and prefers to keep himself to himself.  He doesn’t play with the other dogs, though he enjoys being near them.  He has claimed a kennel near the front of the shelter, where he can happily watch the world go by.  One of his favourite pastimes is to catch flies as they buzz past him. Help support all the dogs! We understand it may be difficult to single out particular dogs to sponsor, as they are all so adorable and deserving.  If you would prefer to send a generic monthly gift to all of the dogs, then you are more than welcome to do so.
