Endangered Species
Resources
|
|
This page provides a list of resources to go with the Endangered Species
booklet.
What causes a species to come under threat of extinction? Who decides whether a species
is endangered? What is being done about these problems? These and other issues are covered in
our introduction to Endangered Species. In so doing we introduce you to species like the
golden-rumped elephant-shrew, the Sumatran rabbit, and the Comoro Island flying fox - which are
as much in need of attention as well-known glamour species like lions and elephants, if not more so.

Which species and why - and what to do
The most authoritative information on the status of threatened species is provided by
IUCN - the World Conservation Union. Their
Red List is
updated annually and is available on-line. The search facility is fairly straightforward.
CITES also provides an information-rich
web-site, including full listing of their
appendices.
For the problems associated with invader species, IUCN have produced a
booklet which
provides an accessible introduction.

stimulating article provided by IUCN, the World Conservation Union,
here.
Gap Species - endangered species currently unprotected
Information on the gap species came from work done by Conservation International. The amount of information for each species
available is highly variable.

Species or People?
Each of the species featured here live in poor countries whose people are
economically dependent upon the same forest resources as the animals.
In our Species or people? feature, we look
at how sustainable development has delivered resources for both animals and
humans.
