Ukraine stray animals:
Written Declaration in the European Parliament

 Please write to your MEPs

In our last issue we brought you news that the appalling treatment of stray animals in Ukraine is still continuing. When we went to Brussels, MEPs said the video evidence was shocking and barbaric.

Caroline Lucas MEP has now tabled a written declaration in the European Parliament which "Urges the Commission and Council to support European States in implementing humane animal control programmes..., including by allocating funds where appropriate."

For this to be officially adopted by the European Parliament, more than half of the MEPs need to sign up. You can help us by writing to the MEPs in your region. (Now that the single-member constituencies have been replaced by multi-member regions, you are free to write to each one in your region.)

The easy way to do this is to use the "Write to them" website, which gives you a simple interface for writing to any of your councillors, MP or MEPs. The instructions are straightforward — just type in your postcode on the initial screen to start.

When you do so, please:

• Mention the number of the declaration — 0031/2006.
• Stress that countries wishing to join the EU will need to adopt EU standards of animal welfare.
• Refer to the Naturewatch briefing that they will have received and a link to the website pages for more information - click here and copy the web address at the top of the browser into your message.
