EU Cosmetics Directive - Uphold the 2013 Ban!

September 2011 – The yearly report on alternative methods to animal testing of cosmetics released by the European Commission on 13th September 2011, confirms “full replacement of the animal tests covered by the 2013 deadline will not be achieved before 11 March 2013”.

Of the remaining tests for which no alternative methods to replace animals have been developed: three toxicity tests remain - reproductive toxicity, toxicogenetics and repeated dose toxicity. Replacements for these tests are not likely to be available for some years: more than 10 years in the case of reproductive toxicity; 5-7 years for toxicokinetics; and for repeated dose toxicity no clear timeline is available. The European Commission is now considering how to proceed, and will make an announcement by the end of 2011.

Naturewatch urges MEPs to uphold the 2013 ban, and support a moratorium on newly-developed cosmetic ingredients until such time as full replacement of animal tests are available.

How you can help:
  • Email your MEP asking him/her to uphold the ban on animal testing of cosmetics and support a moratorium on newly developed ingredients until such time as alternative methods that replace animals are available. Your MEPs contact details here

Background information:

In October 2010, Naturewatch sent a briefing to MEPs outlining earlier failures to ban animal testing, and seeking their support in upholding the 2013 ban.
