Puppy Farming Campaign Update

Local Authority Survey on Stray Dogs and Dog Breeding Establishments

There has been a very positive response to a recent survey that was sent out to all Local Authorities. Early indicators are confirming many of the issues that we suspected; re-enforcing the need for a mandatory Code of Practice for ALL Local Authorities to work to. Once all surveys have been returned, a report will be produced and a copy will be posted here for reference.

Early Day Motion 1281 - Puppy Farms and Animal Welfare

The following EDM has now been tabled and we’ve had a good early response from MP’s signing up. We will shortly publish a list of the MP’s that have yet to put their name to the EDM and, at this point, we will be enlisting your help in urging your own MP to come forward and sign up.

We will also be asking any ministers that are unable to sign the EDM because of their position to send a letter of support to Lord Henley, who is the Minister responsible for Companion Animal Welfare.

“That this House notes public concern regarding puppy farms producing animals in excess of demand; is concerned that this leads to damage to the welfare and health of dogs; further notes an upward trend in abandoned dogs and in the number of dogs being advertised in the media; is concerned that this leads to serious repercussions for dog and animal welfare shelters that deal with unwanted animals; and urges the Government to improve regulations and advertising criteria at breeding establishments and to encourage local authorities to carry out more stringent inspections to tackle this issue at source.”

MP Briefing

All Members of Parliament have been sent a copy of our Briefing Document.  Hopefully, they will digest the information and be willing to show their support for our campaign by signing the Early Day Motion.  View Briefing Document  [pdf]

If you, or anyone you know, has a story you would be prepared to share about your own experiences with puppy farmers, please send an email to debbie@naturewatch.org
