 Bio-D: environmentally sound household products

Realising household pollution causes more damage to the environment than industrial pollution, Bio-D’s co-founders Michael Barwell and Allan Warren were determined to provide ethically sound, safe to use alternatives.

As director of an industrial cleaning company in the mid 1980’s, Michael voiced his concerns over the increasing use of harsh and potentially dangerous chemicals to Alan, then owner of a company distributing hygiene supplies. Alan also harboured misgivings about the environmental credentials of some of the cleaning supplies, and this shared interest and concern for environmental issues, developed into a mission to produce household cleaning products which would have an absolute minimum impact on the environment.

Michael notes “Most of the research was carried out in the Hull Central Library, by letter, Internet and telephone.” Once it was established as to what was and was not acceptable by way of ingredients we decided to push the boundaries wider and only use raw materials that were from renewable, non-petrochemical sources, not tested on animals and containing no animal by-products. Packaging had to be re-cyclable and contain optimum levels of re-cycled material.”

Bio-D operate a strict fixed cut off date policy of 1988, which means they don’t use any ingredients which have been tested on animals after 1988.

Michael notes “The Naturewatch Trust were one of the first organisations to recognise the ethical and environmental credentials of Bio-D products and a listing in the Compassionate Shopping Guide proved highly beneficial in broadcasting our message and increasing sales.”

Michael’s commitment to environmental and ethical issues is clear, “It’s very difficult to differentiate between where work stops and everyday life begins. I apply the same standards of environmental awareness at home as I do at work but that’s easy for me because I’m the boss in both places! (No, I’m not married but perhaps that last statement is false because I live with a cat!)”.

Bio-D’s story is definite proof that if you have concerns, you can change something in a positive way, and you can make it better... surely an inspiration to us all.
